Motor Shield Ugly burn

Post by ardweetno »

My new Motor Shield seems to get an awful power burn. See Pic. It was connected to 2 stepper motors ( Pics) nothing unusual. None of the TB6612 MOSFET suffered but the IC in the middle "CDH653" was hit badly. What happened?

What are the specs on the motors and what were you powering them with?

The IC in the middle is the PCA9685. That chip is a PWM controller and operates at logic levels to drive the H-Bridge chips. There is no motor power going through it.

It was powering 2 standard Stepper motors type 42BYxxx. It had a separate power supply (jumper removed) of 5 V. Maybe that was the problem as the stepper voltage is 12 V? Should I feed the motor shield with 12 V instead of 5 V?

Under-powering a motor is not going to cause any problems - other than less torque from the motor. What is shown on the photo does not appear to be a 'burn' and is not in an area of the board that carries motor power.

Can you get a closer detail of the discolored area around the chip?

Here is a close view of the central IC. It had some white fluff on it, that I cleaned up in the middle. It seems burnt out and that's strange as there is no much power going through it.

That looks more like corrosion than heat-damage. Was the board in a location where something may have dripped on it?

Woah, that's quite a bit of corrosion. Did it show up from adafruit like that? It would surprise us if it passed QC!

The board was always inside on my table, no spill and I don't think that's how it was when I've got it from Adafruit a month ago. If you want, I can send it back to Adafruit so you can have a better look at it.

If you contact [email protected] with a link to this thread we can send you a replacement. I spoke with the production folks and we don't need to get the old one back.
