saving data?

New to arduino, usergroup. The tutorials are very impressive. Is there a way to write data from the arduino to a file for analysis? I have sensors that might be promising for some projects, but would like to characterize their output for setting logic thresholds & filter parameters, etc.

The specific project is to detect the presence of my dog in the banned near the spot he likes to mark. I would like to use basic light/motion sensors to yell at him when he approaches his favorite spot. Or possibly fire a Nerf foam dart at him.

But I would like the question to remain generic - is there a good way to extract data from the arduino analog outputs for analysis/design?

you could use something like the SDLog library (see the GPS shield) to write to SD card. you could also write to the eeprom, ask google or check arduino.cc perhaps?
