got this as a gift for my sister for Christmas, opened it up today, and cant get it to boot up at all. It was a starter kit- so first we tried the pre-loaded micro SD that came with, and when the monitor did nothing (yes tried pressing 1-4), tried with another SD card with both the newest noob installer, and then another SD card with a burned raspian .img - neither to any avail.
Did this first powered through the micro USB, and then afterwards did all the above installations with the GPIO (not at the same time as USB) to no avail. When trying to connect via serial, the computer recognizes a device, but gives me a code 10 error message (this device cannot start).
All the while, the board gets very very hot, very quick.
I've set-up one of these before, but am no expert by far. My first install was fairly easy just following the quick start guide, so I think something may be amiss or faulty with either the SD card reader or the pi itself.
Solutions would be appreciated!

might also add that I did try several different versions of the prolific driver (recommended from this forum), as well as trying to connect the pi to my laptop via ethernet (still, nothing detected).

What do the LEDs on the Pi do? Do you get the green LED lit at all, even dimly? Is the red LED lit?

The PWR LED is lit fully red. The ACT is dimly lit, for a split second it lights fully when I first plug the USB in. No other LEDS are lit.

Re: rpi will not boot up gets very hot
That indicates that the Pi did not find a bootable file system on the SD card.
Please have a look at this troubleshooting page:

Which parts of the Pi are getting warm? Near the power plug, or near the two USB jacks?

After removing the SD card, checking that the files were there on my laptop, and then popping it back in. Now I do not see any ACT green LED (before it was dim). This happens when I use a SD card with a rasbian.img, the NOOBS software, and the SD card adapter (with pre-loaded micro SD) that came with the starter kit.

Did you check the pins in the SD slot to make sure they were springy?
