shopping cart timeout

So I was building a shopping cart earlier this week, and well, it's gone now.

Where'd it go? Can I get it back? Why are shopping carts being timed out? How will I remember what I was ordering?

At the time, I was not logged in. If I build a shopping cart when I am logged in, will I experience the same situation of having my cart dumped on the ground?

How can I have an endlessly persistent shopping cart?

If you are logged in, your shopping cart should persist indefinitely. I've had stuff in my cart for weeks.
