2SC1583 Beta value - Sound test

Postby DJ_Axis » Sat Oct 03, 2009 9:49 am

Hello,

I recently tested a bunch of 2SC1583 and I discovered that the beta value of the 2SC1583
have something to do with sound quality, especially for Q21!

Here's the results:

- 321 hfe

- 684 hfe

- 460 hfe

I also tested the others 2SC1583 (Q26 / Q12) and there is no sonic difference.

That sounds pretty distorted, not a bad thing ofcoz! But could you post some "clean" examples?

Here's clean examples:

- Clean 321 hfe

- Clean 684 hfe

- Clean 460 hfe

There's still differences, but more subtle.

Not to me, I can hear the difference with a decent pair of headphones and audio interface. The 321 one sounds less resonant and narrower on the resonant frequency than the 460 and the 684 sounds like the resonance moves to lower frequencies and wider but tubby and no high frequency "chirp" or "squelch" whatsoever. I like the 460 best and this gives me an idea to try out something in the 400's Hfe-wise as I currently have 1583-g trans in mine at this spot and I'm assuming given the datasheet on these and the sound mine makes that it's probably 600+ give or take due to the sound it produces or somewhere thereabouts. I basically want something with more upper mid resonance.

Mine sounds more like the X0Xsh0p one but moreso in that direction.

I just ordered some 1583-F's and will swap those out and compare.

Thanks for the tip, had a kit with all "G" 1583 which sounded like your highest HFE rated q21 samples and socketed mine tonight and tried out the "F" 1583's and noticed the exact same changes. I don't have any low hfe rated ones yet but the difference is quite noticeable and in exactly the same way. I don't know how this is not audible to some however maybe they are on cheap computer speakers or have bad ears or something of that sort.
this might not affect some builds due to the variety of parts involved but on mine it was sweet.
