2SC2291-89C do not work.
Ordered from BANNED , who are quite good with parts. Have gotten 2sc2291-16F from them before.
No measurements but it will give 500 hfe in reverse pin-out as with 1583 (!?) Restamped 2SC1583 (hfe 300) ??
Real pain in the neck. Watch-out!!

Re: 2sc2291-89C really 2sc1583
They work as 2sc1583 , put them in place and they work as normal 2sc1583 , did sound recordings back to back no difference!!
So its not all bad , just goes to show that re-stamping is quite common.

Are these what Gaetano has mentioned before? The fakes?

I think it was 1583 that were the fakes . These work good they just aren't 2291

Re: 2sc2291-89C really 2sc1583
I wonder if these are re-re-stamped 2SC1583 52G that Gaetano was talking about. The reason being after I saw his thread on those the other day, I looked and found two with the 52G marking in my stash. They were the correct pin-out, but the Hfe measured around 350, when the Hfe on a couple of the "vintage" 1583's I have measured in the mid 600's. Swapping those back and forth made a big difference in the sound, especially noticeable when swapping them back and forth as the differential amp/buffer of the filter. The least difference, basically inaudible, was in the VCO.textile wrote:They work as 2sc1583 , put them in place and they work as normal 2sc1583 , did sound recordings back to back no difference!!

I had the same problem so I decided to give ebay another go and did think about maybe to match transistors BC549c that was the idea from the guy who built it for me so did another search and little diode was the company that came up and also some one like 20 miles away so decided to order one from each of them but the little diode was the best gain http://www.littlediode.com/
P.S I started ordering parts 3 months ago and been playing with it about 2 weeks you can get the parts I found just don't give up its worth it in the end ..

what are the symptoms of a box that might have duds fitted?

The filter does not work. I was also one of the lucky ones: http://adafruit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=38575rarara wrote:what are the symptoms of a box that might have duds fitted?

yes Ut source are a good company they gave me the fake one I sent them message just to let them know I was not upset as I can use it as the 1583 in my yusynth synth I am building ..textile wrote:2SC2291-89C do not work.

Re: 2sc2291-89C DUDs
I was just bit by this; I have a part labeled as a "C2291 16F" which is actually a common-emitter NPN transistor pair (like a 2SC1583 or 2SC2259), whereas a real 2291 would be a common-base NPN pair.
I guess one way to recognize this might be the fact that the "F" is slightly misshapen. Pic:
