USB Chip Soldering

Postby synesthesia » Sun Nov 14, 2010 1:09 pm

Hi all,

I finally got a full kit, without the USB chip soldered. I tried to solder it, but there is a couple of bridge i can't remove.

What is the best course of action from there ? A person I know just cut the traces powering the chip and it seems good enough ( i don't need the USB ) or would it be better to simply get a new PCB with presoldered chip ? ( if so - from where ? )

Thank you !

I found de-soldering braid useful, and used a fine silver solder with a low melting point.

Basically go back over the bridged traces with the braid and it will soak up the excess solder when heated through the back with the iron.

If you have stuffed it up and your probably not going to use it (as it is quite easy to program it via ponyprog) cut the power trace and don't use it.

If its you own then be free to do what you want :D

Other than that get the iron tip really clean , get some flux or 'bakers fluid' and heat the tip up and dip it in then clean, then tin the tip with solder and wipe the excess solder off.
Then use braid or a solder pump. Keep a steady hand and don't rush it
You could also cut the bridge with a banned (?) but try to get as much of with braid or a pump.

You also MUST use liquid flux. It makes life 1,000,000 times easier. With good flux I can solder the whole chip in minutes with no clean up with braid..
