(SOLVED) Installing x0xb0x from OSX 10.6.7?

Postby Lawless » Mon Apr 18, 2011 10:17 am

Hello guys, i don't get much of reading the descriptions of how to install the x0xb0x from OSX, so i would be very glad if i could get some help with this!

I've bought a x0xb0x-KIT from Mode Machines and have just finished assembling it.

I´ve installed the USB Drivers, and the c0ntr0l app, but that app just gives me this error:

c0ntr0l Error
An unexpected error has occurred during execution of the main script

ImportError: dlopen(/Applications/c0ntr0l.app/Contents/Resources/lib/python2.5/lib-dynload/wx/_core_.so, 2): Symbol not found: __ZN15wxPoint2DDouble14SetVectorAngleEe
Referenced from: /Applications/c0ntr0l.app/Contents/Resources/lib/python2.5/lib-dynload/wx/_core_.so
Expected in: /usr/lib/libwx_macud-2.8.0.dylib

(I´ve got two choices after that, "Open Console" and "Terminate")

-------------

So i guess the c0ntr0l app doesn't work on OSX 10.6.7(?)
What should i do? I don't own a PC with Windows.

Cheers/
Tim

It's not totally impossible to do in OS X, because 1 or 2 brainiacs have actually managed it. However, it's a damn site easier to do on a Windows PC. Well, I say "Easier".. it's all relative!

If you are running 10.6 then you have an Intel Mac that can potentially run Windows via Bootcamp etc. So if you really don't have access to a regular PC, then this might be another route to consider. This is how I do it on my Mac.

I did try in OS X, and failed repeatedly. I expect that flossing between my ass cheeks with rusty barbed wire would be more fun than trying to install x0xb0x firmware via OS X..

A bit graphic there Luap... ;)

One more thing: Does modemachine x0xb0xes come with a bootloader? I thought they were TT?

Yes, they are the same. But I would hope the bootloader thing was rectified in later kits. If not, then thats another headache he has to deal with :?

Thanks for the replies guys!

I have to c if i can borrow a friends computer then. Does it need to be XP, or will Windows 7 work?
This bootloader thing you are talking about, is it something preinstalled on the chip or what? (Sorry, i'm totally fresh on this stuff!)

If it appears to be missing, whats the procedure then?

yes and it has to be present for the x0xb0x to connect via USB. MM/TT machines do NOT have the micro-controller flashed correctly. You should contact them for a proper one

Okey, thats a bummer! :(
But does that mean that it won't connect via USB at all? Because it appear in the connected USB devices when i connected it the other day.

hey Lawless,

check this post from RodmanSan: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=15436&p=76277#p76277
he uses 10.4.x but maybe this is the right direction?
what would you like to do via USB? the main intention of the USB port in the x0x is for updating the software.
there are maybe some other functions, so what exactly do you expect?

cheers,

I just assumed that i had to install it because it was a kit.
I tried it out just now for the first time, it seems to be working, but i haven't tested everything yet either. I just made a simple Acid pattern.
I don't know what OS it got right out of the box, but on the frontside of the user manual it says ( Sokkos OS 1.9.1 ).
I would be nice to be able to update the firmware sometime to.

I think i will send Mode Machines a mail and maybe get some clarification. :)

If the usb chip works you get a connection so good work on that build!
But then the usbchip has talk to the bootloader in the uhm... big chip ;)
If that boot loader is missing you won't be able to upgrade to another os.
All(?) tt-machines do how ever come with x0xb0x original os so it works and you can make music, you just don't get the latest bells' an whistles of for instance sokkos.

edit: oh.. maybe you've got sokkos 1.9.1 then... (the beta2 has triplets... so you will want to flash)

Okey, the USB chip was presoldered, so that was nice because i don't have a microscope. :)

I read this somewhere in the forum:
"To determine whether bootload is present: they said that if you power on the x0xb0x in 'computer control' mode and all LED's light up, the processor is locked. As that was the case with mine, they were kind enough to send me a replacement processor which arrived yesterday."

I tried that and non of the LED's light up, so that should mean that the bootload is present if i'm not mistaken. (?)
Ran som test yesterday, and i find the x0xb0x acting a bit funny, i can't sync it with and external clock (Ableton).

May be this is the issue: "in batch #6 we've started to notice that the optoisolators are possibly made to a different specification. If MIDI out and MIDI thru are working but MIDI in is not, try upping R16 to 120 or 150 ohms!"

Try downloading the safebox software and see if that works, it's a more forgiving than c0ntr0l. If your mode machines box did ship with a bootloader, you will be the first person ever that I have heard of so chances are, you DONT have it there.

Thanks for the replies guys!

What do i have to do to check if the bootloader exist?
I'm getting confused with all the programs and stuff you have to install and to stuff with.
I will be trying this on Windows because it seems like there is no way to do this in OSX 10.6.

Thanks/

if the x0x has a bootloader here's how it looks like:
1) you turn the x0x OFF
2) switch to BOOTLOAD mode
3) turn the x0x ON
- the x0x usually lights (some / or all / or none) of the LEDs and stays like that
- if you try to switch it to some other mode (pattern play for example) - it won't respond at all

i have no idea what will it do if there is no bootloader on the chip but i guess:
3) ....
- it might or might not light some LEDs
- if you try to switch it to some other mode - it *might* just switch and operate normally

again, this is only my prognosis, but if it's true - then this might be the considered the "symptoms" of bootloader present or not

PS: anyone reading this who knows he doesn't have the bootloader - can he plese check and see what happens with such an experiment?
