They are socketed, but I don't understand what your asking me to do. Would you give me details?

remove the ics
and then turn on the x0x
and see if any of the modes work

that will let you know
if the powersupply issue is from the leds or not
which it probably is

if the gate isnt working
then it might be hard to tell whats happening
as the x0x wont make any sound
you can try leaving ic4 installed
and at least some lights will come on

also be sure to check the 7805
the 220ohm resistors are pretty small
and give about 20ma per led
if 20 leds come on
thats 400ma
which is about the limit of the usual powersupply

I removed IC5 and now I can't get it to freeze up like before. So do I increase the resistor values of the LEDs to make it work?

if the leds are the brightness you want
then changing the resistors is undesirable
instead you would want to increase the powersupply

but first
it would be good to check that it is just too little power
and not a shorted out ic or resistor or something

get it to boot up
and go through all the leds
and check that they all turn on
and are of equal brightness

You mean, get them to light up individually in the different modes?

you can put the x0x in keyboard mode
and then push all the buttons
and most of the leds should light up

then rotate through the bank knob
and all of the step leds should light up

First a question: should the LED of the current step be flashing opposite of the tempo LED when editing a pattern?

I can get all of the LEDs to light up except for:
- "Prev"
-  "Done"
- all of the black keys

There are a couple of other problems I noticed with the LEDs.
1) when running a pattern, the step LEDs light up in sequence like this 1 doesn't light up, 2 lights, 3 lights, then 4 & 5 don't light up, etc., so it skips LEDs, but not steps. The step LEDs are flashing opposite of the tempo LED:  tempo LED is on when Step LEDs are off and vice versa.
2) I cannot program the black keys in a pattern.  The LEDs don't light up and the switches don't register that a note was selected.

sounds like a couple of different problems
although without sound
its hard to say whats going on

if it happens to be in track edit mode by some other problem
then the black keys shouldnt do anything
also the step leds only blink in track edit mode
so youre in track edit mode

the prev and done buttons dont ever light up
this is normal
the done light might come on
when you edit an already existing pattern
and you land on the last step of a pattern that is less than 16 steps long

put it in keyboard mode and see what happens to the leds

Wow. Don't I feel stupid? I did in fact have it in Track Edit mode when I thought it was in Pattern Edit mode. My encoders were packaged pre-cut with no indication what it was pointing at. I was told that the "Next" button only worked in Pattern Edit mode, so that's how I'd know what the encoder was dialed to. Apparently, not so...

So guess what? Keyboard mode, Random mode, Pattern Edit mode all work and I can hear it when I probe VR8. Thanks so much for your help.

There's, of course, still the issue of the LEDs staying on after power up. It wouldn't hurt for me to increase the LED resistor values across the board, but I don't how much I'd need to in order to get rid of the problem and still keep adequate brightness. I'll have to look into it. For now, I can just count to 5.

glad to hear
you should still check all the leds
and make sure they all light up the same

you can increase the resistor values
probably 1k would be fine
or try a 9vac 1amp powersupply

I discovered that my DSL modem uses a 9VAC 1A power supply. I tried it with the x0x and it works just like it should. No random lock-ups.
Thanks, guest, for all of your help. Now I'm trying to figure out why my ENV2 ACC trigger won't work...

the only thing to be careful of
when using a 1amp adapter
is that the voltage on c8 isnt above 25v or so

Do you mean plug in the 1A adapter, power on and test C8 with voltmeter?
