Background noise problem

Post by etaoin »

I have just finished building #149 for someone else (after doing my own) and it worked first time round (http://www.dompselaar.org/x0xb0x/149/x0x149_02.mp3) but on closer inspection there is a constant background noise in there. It also amplifies VR8 slider movement. I tried a replacement for VR8 (different type and brand) but that sounds exactly the same. The noise seems to be present on VCA output anyway. I can see it on the scope. Power lines are clean. I would've just put this down to it being old circuitry, but since my own b0x doesn't have this, it must be something else.
Any ideas?

Here's the background noise (much amplified) with me moving VR8:

I should probably add that apart from this background noise, both x0x's sound and function exactly identical.

There's a suggestion from someone on the SDIY list that it doesn't actually sound much worse than a real 303. Maybe I was just lucky with my dead silent #082?

Meanwhile, when I was supposed to do some work and call back clients:

Okay, ignore me. I just found that my own x0xb0x was connected to a mixer channel that had a -57 dB noise gate switched in. No wonder it was dead quiet... Damn these digital mixers.
