Chip gets too hot even when nothing is connected

Ok - the chip gets way too hot before I even connect anything.

I did not notice the heat prior to attaching the USB connector.

FYI - First time I have done any solder work.

Looks like all the components are placed correctly and the solder is not bad for your first project .

There are a couple of spots that could use some touch-up, but we should track down the cause of the heat first. The only thing that looks suspicious from here is the capacitor lead next to the black battery wire. That (and other leads) should be clipped closer to the board to make sure that it doesn't cause a short circuit by touching an adjacent solder joint.
