Would this iPhone charger work?
Any comments on this suggestion?

It might work for a while, but the device will probably reject the supply once the battery voltage starts to droop.
On a more practical note, there's no power conditioning or current limiting in there. Lead-acid batteries are known for their ability to supply lots of current for a short time, and I'd be leery of hooking a $450 device straight to that.
I vaguely remember having seen a video on YouTube where some guy used a car battery and a chunk of pencil lead to charge a phone.. does it work? Arguably yes. Is it a good idea? Arguably no.
