Alternative boost IC?

Post by tempeleng »

Looking at parts listed on element14.com it seems like the LT chip is the most expensive component in Mintyboost.
Are there any other alternatives that are significantly cheaper? My own search turned up these alternatives, each with their own set of cons:

Simpler circuit, but needs an inductor.
Cheaper, but not by much.
Difficult to solder.

Super cheap, tiny & comes pre-assembled :)
Simpler circuit, but output current is too low = slower charging (200ma)
Can possibly connect 2 in series with a switch and ballast resistors to support dual device charging or 1 higher powered charge.
Shipping cost is 4 times the device itself!

I'm a bit surprised at the lack of reasonable options. How come products like the one below come so cheaply?

I've already ordered one from that site. I'll probably be tempted to take it apart after a few weeks to see how they designed the boost circuit :p
