MAX856 as a replacement for MAX756?

Post by gerhardo »

MAX756 seem to be hard to find here, but MAX856 is available. The IC seem pretty similar in spec, but output at 5V is 100mA instead of 200mA. I intend to use it to charge a Garmin Forerunner 305 that reportedly have a 3.7V 700mAh LiIon battery. Obviously, some parts have to be replaced, similar to the Maxim diagrams.

Anyone with info if 100 mA should be sufficient?
Any thoughts to the component selection for MAX856?

Another option could be LM78S40, but that requires more designing...

Edit: My GF 305 uses about 380 mA when charging so the MAX856 is probably not a good idea....
