Alternate designs

Post by nsayer »

I didn't really have a pressing need, but I went through the exercise of designing an SMD version of MintyBoost. I was able to come up with one, but what really gave me pause was the $6 price of the LT1302.

I checked into alternatives. I had used the NCP1402 before, but it can only make 200 mA. That led me to the NCP1450, which uses an external MOSFET. The two combined are only about $1.50 or so.

I do get it - MintyBoost needs to stay a through-hole design for the sake of being useful as a beginner's project, but maybe there's a compromise of some sort... putting an NCP1450 onto a breakout board as a part for the MintyBoost? Or perhaps pre-mounting it on the board and using through-hole parts for everything else?

Interesting suggestion. I'll pass it along to the product engineers

We suggest the Powerboost 500 as a replacement if you need something mintyboost like, it has many extras!
