I have mine built around MAX757 chip. :D

Post by wildswan »

I was not able to get the MAX756 right away and when it finally came, I was done with the MAX757 version. I was able to charge my iPod Video 30GB 2nd Gen with no problem. I was also able to power up some generic MP3/MP4 players.

Here are some photos:

I have used the battery low feature. I have set it to light when the source goes down to 2V.

I have designed my own PCB and I have used a double sided one to be able to use a ground plane. According to Maxim, ground plane helps to make the chip work better.

Now that it is working, I wonder if we can improve the device in some ways like:

1. Over discharge protection if a rechargeable is used.
2. Power/Charging indicator?

I have also tried the SHDN pin to switch the chip on and off but I have decided to just leave it high since even it is off, the battery monitor is stil working and this slowly discharges the battery. The best way is to remove the battery when you are not going to use it. :D

The schematic is not trivial. You can use what is on the datasheet and improve (or degrade) it depending on what you want to achieve.

What I like about max is the ability of the chip to work below 1V.

Right now, I am working on yet another Max chip that is capable of delivering 2Amp and could also work under 1V.

I've ordered a sample from Maxim. You can talk to them on how could you buy from them.
