Range of Effect

Post by lightningserpent »

I finished my WB (RC1a) this morning. I anxiously powered it and waited for it to burst into a ball of fire. Thankfully it powered up and began working. The entire ground plane gets pretty warm, but even after running it for 20 minutes nothing was ever really hot. The fact it even works means I will mark this as a success.

I realize range varies wildly based on the attenuation, gain, antennas, etc, but I am curious about what kind of range people are getting out of their builds. With external antennas mine works to about 7-8 feet away on an HTC Inspire and 10-11 feet away on an iPhone 3GS. Much lower than the 20 feet ladyada got with hers.

What version did you build?
What kind of range did you get on your build?
Did you use internal or external antennas?

I have 2 of the WB2010 rev 2b's; and for certain carriers except sprint and iphones, i get about 20-25ft with ~2dB antennas. It is kind of cool because not only do people not have service, it drains their battery horribly quick. One coworker lost about 25% battery in 10-15min. I cannot however touch Iphone's or sprint. Would you please post the freq ranges your are imputing into the terminal as I am using 1900-2100 and get nothing really to speak of for GSM freq'sl? Thanks - Viperspike

I am using the RC1a with ROS-1300 and ROS-2700-1819 VCOs and BANNED-84 amps. The antenna for the high range is a W1911 (~2db gain). I input 1900-2000 in the terminal, however, I do not have a spectrum analyzer so I cannot confirm the actual operating frequency.
