SpokePOV, can't write, diagnostics

Postby tomjennings » Thu Aug 17, 2006 2:10 am

Hi, bought a SpokePOV kit, assembled, tested OK (power on LED run). Having problem loading image to it.

Host computer is Win XP Pro, SP2. Since I forgot to buy a serial dongle I made a parallel one.

I get the informative "Failed at address 0". I don't doubt I've screwed up, but I could use a hint. There's very little info on the web page as to what normal behavior and sequence of events is, precisely.

giveio is running; giveio_status says so; giveio_install claims sucess.

With the dongle plugged on, power-on-reset by removing a battery ("POR") doesn't run the LED sequence test. Dongle off, it does. Is this correct behavior? (I assume the microcontroller sees the host via dongle and waits for a command.)

I put a 'scope on the 4-wire interface:

** RESET remains high always (click WRITE, press switch)

** MOSI/SPI_IN stays high always

** SCK see pulses on click WRITE, no pulses on switch press

** MISO/SPI_OUT see pulses on switch press, no pulses on WRITE click

There seems to be specific static LED patterns with the dongle on (switch press changes it), could tell U which LEDs if it's diagnostic (as opposed to random :-)

It's really not clear what I *am* supposed to see; precisely when and in what order I am supposed to do the following:

** power reset
** press switch
** click WRITE
?

ANy help appreciated... one week to go til BRC... I assume not enoug time to order and ship a serial dongle before next week!

I use a serial dongle, but the order of operations seems to be pretty important for me.

1) Make sure header is disconnected
2) Power up board
3) Start SpokePOV
4) Connect header

Thanks!! OK, that tells me a lot; the lack of power-on-reset-LED-test with the dongle plugged on was tripping me up.

Then I assume it's:

5)Press switch on spokePOV
6)Click WRITE

?

Thanks again!!

3) was in reference to SpokePOV.exe , btw.

And you should be able to write, right after the power-on LED test, no need to reset the board.

Good luck!

Problem solved

Sheesh, no matter how many times you check it's not enough... I had my dongle wired wrong. Duh. Never mind!

I'm having repeatable software problems w/spokePOV.exe but will start separate thread.
