Here's a picture of an experiment I've been playing with. Instead putting the LEDs on the wheel and the magnet on the frame, I put the LEDs on the frame in a circular pattern and put the magnet on the wheel. The LEDs are UV and synchronized to the wheel rotation. I've attached fluorescent bits of color at regular intervals (every 40 degrees). The pattern is frozen in space by the strobe effect, and since they're UV LEDs as illumination, to the viewer, the color bits appear to be emitting color spontaneously. The picture doesn't do it justice because the colors are dayglo fluorescent, and the pattern was crawling in rotation so the exposure blurred the pattern a little.
