USB/Serial Converter - PL2303 code 10 error in Win7

by droid664 on Mon Dec 19, 2011 8:02 pm

Hi, I recently purchased USB/Serial Converter - PL2303 and downloaded the most recent driver as recommended from the Prolific website. However, I'm still getting a code 10 error and the cable doesn't work. This cable was made in China.

Below is prolific response about the code 10 error.
----------------------------------------------------------------
If you are getting an Error Code 10 with a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager after installing the latest Prolific PL-2303 driver, please contact the cable maker of your product for Prolific chip validity and support. Prolific strongly recommend to only purchase USB-to-Serial cables from company-branded products providing technical support. It is not advisable to buy from unknown cable makers (no-brand cables) made in China. Prolific does not manufacturer any end-product cables and will not provide direct support to end-users.

the cables we sell havent had any problems before, but windows 7 has been a real pain lately - can you try the cable on another non win 7 computer first?

I don't have a non-windows computer. Can you get a certification from your vendor/distributor that this is in fact a prolific chipset (PL-2303) ? If so, what is the work around for the code 10 problem. Using a non-windows computer is not a solution.

I have one running on Win-7/64 with the standard Prolific driver, but I have seen several reports of people having better luck with the USGlobalSat version of the driver. The USGlobalSat link appears broken, but here is another source. http://edvoncken.net/2010/08/pl-2303-usb-to-serial-driver/

we've verified that this is a PL-2303 - a lot of cheap cables are really a CH430 which is way more trouble and we've had that issue before

so if this is a PL-2303, then a window's machine shouldn't be an issue and a new version of driver should work. Nevertheless, this is really a nice looking cable. The Prolific driver version 1.013 works. I suggest you update the product description, so that other customers do not download the new prolific driver and encounter the same problem.

hi, this is a PL2303 cable, not a CH430 cable.
did you try installing the drivers that adafruit_support linked to?

Im having the same issues as everyone above... heres a screen shot.. i have tried using this cable on 4 different machines.. 2 win 7 1 xp and my mac book.. still same issues this cable has put me days behind in my work.. Its not that difficult to install dirvers, I have tried the new drivers and the old drivers, I have manually pasted them directly into system 32, drivers folder and they install but errrors. I have tried the .exe extensions running it as admin errors.. Im totally stumped at this point...

that link you sent me with the old drivers is a bad link.. if you can find me the really old drivers to try i can try them for sh** and giggles.. Ignore the base system device has nothing to do with what were having issues with those are drivers for my quick play app..
These appear to install correctly, but upon inserting the USB cable Windows 7 returns an error “The Device Cannot Start (Code 10)”
