Micro SD Card Woes

Postby Rob_sf » Sat Jun 23, 2012 6:43 pm

Hello All,

I received the Micro-Sd breakout shield yesterday, and soldered it up today. Fairly sure I did a semi-decent job on it. So when I plug it in I sometimes get the Act+ light to stay solid or flash. I plugged in everything as described (Digital 13-10) and even tried changing up the CS port to other ones. On all but 1 port it does nothing (Initilization error + no lights) except on port 4 where the light will blink when reset, but then fail initizlization. I've obviously changed the code to reflect the CS port.

Any ideas of what might be going on, or do I have a defective board? It sometimes will stay steady light on when I don't have any of the ports plugged in other than 5v and 0v. (BTW my board is putting out 4.8-4.3v on the 5v rail according to my multi meter) could this be it?

Any ideas appeciated.

I think this is the photo…

What processor board are you using? Do you have any other devices attached to it?

Hello,

Thanks for helping. I'm using a Nanode (nanode.eu) for the micro-controller. From my understanding of their documentation the pin outs are identical to an Uno. I have removed all other items (LCD, analog and digital sensors) except for the RTC breakout clock from adafruit.

I'm plugging the device into pins 13-10 (although I've tried other pins for the CS port). It does light up the activity light when you run the script, but then it comes back as failure to initialize. I have tried several micro-sd card too.

Any ideas?

Is the card you're using initialized with a FAT16 file system? Have you tried a different card?
I think the Sd2Card class is throwing an error. Unfortunately, the SD class doesn't provide a method for returning that error code.

Hello,

Thanks for your help. The card is formatted with FAT32 (I only have a Windows 7 box) at my disposal. From the tutorial it says that FAT32 is ok. I have tried several cards with the same results.

Is the board behaving normally as seen in the video with the short led burst then nothing? Any other ideas?

The error output on your screen was not readable in the video. Can you please post it?
Also, it might be helpful if you could post your sketch code

The error output / sketch is the sample sketch under the Adafruit SD library.

There are five sample sketches there. Do you mean the CardInfo sketch? And what does it print for you?

Yes, the card info.

It says:

Initializing SD card... initialization failed.
Things to check:
is a card is inserted?
Is your wiring correct?
did you change the chipSelect pin to match your shield or module?

I also tried the other sketeches and they came back with roughly the same thing that something failed.
