Trouble with new MAX31855 board

Postby mike-mick » Wed Jun 27, 2012 8:13 am

I just hooked up my new MAX31855 board to Arduino Uno. I started the serialthermocouple.pde sketch with the T/C disconnected. I saw the message "Something wrong with thermocouple" message on the serial monitor. I disconnected power and attached the T/C and restarted the sketch. Now I saw that both internal temp and temp C were = 0. I disconnected the T/C and the temps were still = 0.

I'm afraid that in futzing with the T/C connection I may have burnt out the input. Is it that sensitive to making connections when powered (if I inadvertently did that)?

Any suggestions?

Post a photo showing your soldering and connections. Connecting a T/C while powered should not be a problem. Power & data connections to the breakout itself are best done with the power off.

Hopefully you can see the connections:
Pwr - 5v
Gnd
Clk - A5
CS - A4
DO - A3

T/C + - Wht lead
T/C- - red lead

T/C is K-T/C, checked out on other systems. I have other K-T/C's also.

Have you modified the sketch to match your connections? The example sketch uses digital 3, 4, 5
Code: Select all
#include "Adafruit_MAX31855.h"

int thermoDO = 3;
int thermoCS = 4;
int thermoCLK = 5;

Adafruit_MAX31855 thermocouple(thermoCLK, thermoCS, thermoDO);

Also, a close-up photo of the soldering would be good.

Thanks for the help. I connected to the proper pins and am now trying different values of cap in parallel with T/C. Readings seem to be fine.
