New Atmega32U4 Breakout Board is dead?

by loopmasta on Fri Nov 16, 2012 6:46 am

Hi. I just received my Atmega32U4 Breakout Board and connected it via a usb cable to my Mac Mini. The power led on the board does not light up and the mac does not recognize the board. 'system_profiler SPUSBDataType' in the terminal does not list the board. Do i need to add external power to the board or set any jumpers or the like to make it work?

no. i tried with two different usb cables on two different computers. i'll post some voltage measurements later when i'm back home to grab my voltmeter.

I am back home and did some tests with my Macbook Air. Here the situation is a little bit more complex. :-)

1.) hookup the board via usb cable to my Macbook Air. The red and green led blink in sync about 8 times and then stop.
port +5 -> 1.46v
port +3 -> -0.5v

2.) hookup the board via usb cable to a powered usb hub with no connection to the mac. The red led is on. The green led is blinking.
port +5 -> 3.15v
port +3 -> 3.0v

3.) hookup the usb hub (with the connected board) to the mac. The led's shut off completely.
port +5 -> 1.46v
port +3 -> -0.5v

4.) disconnect the usb hub from the mac and we are back to step 2.

Other boards i use like the Arduino Uno or my breadboard atmega644p run fine on the same usb port.
What should i test next to verify is the board is dead or not?

Ok. So its not dead but not really working either. Thats why i put a question mark behind my post subject.

What about the voltages? Are they ok?
Why is it not showing up as a connected device on any computer i could get my hand on? (pc & mac)
Did you watch the video? Why is the red led (PWR) blinking? How about the fact that the led's top blinking after a few seconds?
If it's not dead what should i do next to get it working?

And please. Could you answer my questions a little more in depth instead of just saying "... its not dead". That would be great. Thank you.

Yes. I tried 5 different cables of different length and quality. All work fine with other boards. The result is always the same as shown in the video.

Hello,

I was checking my just arrived ATMega32u4 Breakout board and with two different cables, I get no response connecting this to the usb port of a Macbook pro. The cables both are working with external usb hard drives, other boards, etc. No light turns on, the computer hasn't the slightest clue that something is plugged in. Anything else I can do to test if it is still with us? Could I try a 5v power supply?

Thanks
fraguada
