Need Help: How to Power PiGrrl with NTSC/PAL TFT for OpenGL

Post by romibi »

First: I haven't bought anything yet. I'm just evaluating...
I'd really like to make a PiGrrl ... but I'd like to use the Pi's graphic processor to be able to run more emulators...
I know of the possibility to copy the framebuffer to enable low-framerate OpenGL with the Screen used in the tutorial, but why not make the hardware better?

So I was thinking I could turn the Raspberry Pi 180° so that the yellow chinch is inside or I could solder the cable to the back of that chinch connector or something along those lines... and use a screen like https://www.adafruit.com/products/912 ...

Making these thoughts I already knew I'd have to modify the case and I would have to modify the software but that's the smaller Problem...

Because then i noticed in the Screen's Description: "simply connect 6-15VDC"

How the heck do I get 6+ V in the PiGrrl?

Use 3 Lithium Ion 3.7v one for the Pi and two for the Screen? If so would I have to use 2 USB LiIon/LiPoly chargers?
But I wouldn't want to have to charge it with 2 cables...
Or could I use 2 and is there something opposite to PowerBoost 500 like PowerThrottle 500 for the Pi?
Or is there a PowerBoost which outputs 6V?

I really hope someone has a solution...
This is the first project where i have to use a custom power source so I'd really appreciate your help...

I'm really looking forward to play NES, SNES, GB, GBC & GBA on the go on a self built device...
(Yes I know I'll have to add additional buttons...)

P.S. @ Moderators: Is this in the correct Forum Section?

yes the way openGL is wrten for Pi you have to use HDMI or composite to get accelleration, it will not work 'natively' on the pitft frame buffer

you can use an UBEC https://www.adafruit.com/product/1385
or
buck converter https://www.adafruit.com/product/1065

and then power with maybe a camcorder battery (7.2V) or 4xAA?

Just to be sure i made an image on how i understand that i can connect it:
pi with good screen.png
pi with good screen.png (350.99 KiB) Viewed 192 times
So this should work? With the needed Voltages and Amps and so, right?
Charching like this would work too?
How long would one charge hold compared to the original PiGrrl (estimated)?
