monitoring power consumption of raspberry pi

Post by alexdean »

I'm building a project using a battery-powered Raspberry Pi. In testing I've put my multimeter between the battery supply and the Pi, allowing me to see how many mA are being drawn at any particular moment. I'd like to be able to collect this data when the project is out in the field.

After reading a few tutorials on using your INA219 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/904), I'm wondering if I can use this package to allow the Pi to monitor its own power consumption. ie: Can the Pi be both the monitoring system and the system under test?

If that isn't a good idea, what other options should I consider?

thanks!

Yeah, a RasPi can monitor its own power consumption with an INA219.

You'll lose up to 100mA across the sense resistor, but that shouldn't cause any problems.
