Pixy Pet Robot and Leonardo board

Post by david_parkington »

Hey everyone

I have been using the Pixy Pet project as a demonstration project in a workshop environ for a few months now and it works really well. Thanks Bill Earle!

But the bad news I have just discovered is that the Leonardo is being retired!

My question is would it be possible to use an Uno board in place of the Leonardo or will this be an issue?

And to Bill: a challenge - What are the chances of a Pixy Pet Robot II project....

On the Uno, there's a hardware conflict between the pins the Zumo motion base needs and the ones the Pixy needs. You need an ATmega32u4 board to make the Pixy Pet work.

You could probably make one of the other ATmega32u4 breakouts work, but wouldn't get the plug-and-go simplicity of the Zumo.

Bill knows more about the project than I do though.

As Mike says, there is a pin conflict. The Pixy Pet uses SPI to communicate with the camera and some of the SPI pins on the UNO are used by the Zumo for motor control.

You could probably use a Mega if you removed the blade from the front of the Zumo. But it would hang over and not look so nice. :(

I'll look into other alternatives.

Thanks Mike and Bill.

I am interested in any alternatives you come up with...balancing practicality and aesthetics of course! Robots need to look good after all.

Pixy cable connecting directly to an Arduino mega. What pins are then unusable for other activity? Is Pixy then using pins 20 and 21 because of I2C? Is it using pins 50, 51, 52 and 53 from the ICSP jack?

Which cable and communication mode are you using? The Pixy can communicate via SPI, I2C or serial.
