Thumb Joystick resistance

Post by lamikam »

I got the analog thumb joystick breakout board. I am assuming the pot wiring is from Xout->GND and Yout->GND. When I measure the resistance on either X or Y, I get the following average values based on the position:

min = 71 ohms (close enough to 0)
center = 3.25 Kohms
max = 4.36K ohms.

1. Etching on board says pots should show 10K max resistance. Why am I not seeing that?
2. If these are linear pots, why is center point not max/2, i.e., 2.18K for this example?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what the tolerances on the internal potentiometers are, but they can be pretty wide for that kind of device. It's also possible that you might be seeing some effects from parallel resistance through the pots.

Try connecting a known voltage across the VCC and GND points, then measuring the voltage at the two wiper points. See how well that maps to linear changes in position.

OK, I will try that. Thanks.
