Need help with USBtinyISP/SPOkePOV communication

Post by smlidia »

I am having trouble establishing communication between SpokePOV software through USBtinyISP and SpokePOV ucontroller. I am looking
for guidance on diagnostics or addtional tests to determine AVR programmer functionality. SpokePOV board LEDs change state during
communication attempts, but 'fail to communicate' is always the result.

FIRST: USBtinyISP froma kit (arrived with SpokePOV)

SECOND: Mac OSX 10.10.2, Macbook PRo, USB port

THIRD: SpokePOV v1.4, avrdude 6.0.1

FOURTH: USBtinyISP never worked to communicate with target. Solder joints have been inspected and
rewetted additonal 1-2 times. Test Port initially failed. Now it passes every time.

USBtinyISP AVR
R4, R7 installed
Green LED on, Red LED on during communication

10-pin cable passes continuity check

Test Port tests

JP3 in JP3 out

Pin 1 5.15/0.0 0.23/1.4

Pin 5 5.15/0.0 0.2/0.2

Pin 7 5.15/0.0 1.8/0.1

Passes test with JP3 installed

FIFTH: Post screenshots (NOT copy&paste) of what is happening

SIXTH: see attachments

Observed behavior:

Removed JP3 from programmer. Installed fresh batteries into SpokePOV board.

SpokePOV board passes startup test (LEDs), Reset OK. LED #6 (counting from ATtiny2313) is ON.

Terminal communication over USB to programmer

No target attached (no JMP)

[qajaq:~/Dropbox/adafruit/spokepov] steve% avrdude -c usbtiny -p m8

avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude done. Thank you.

Target attached (SpokePOV ATtiny2313V-10PU, no JMP, batteries in, LEDs on)

[qajaq:~/Dropbox/adafruit/spokepov] steve% avrdude -c usbtiny -p t2313

avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude done. Thank you.

SpokePOV Soft Connect

Comm delay varied from 4000 to 10000
USB PORT

On SpokePOV board LED #7 (counting from ATtiny2313) turns OFF and LED #3 turns ON during Connect attempt
Resets to LED #7 when "avrdude -c usbtiny -p t2313" is issued

Same for 2 other SpokePOV boards

RC = -1 indicates a problem on the SpokePOV itself. Can you post pictures of that?

Thanks. Here are 4 pics of the SpokePOV board. This is 1 board out of 3, which is having the same issue.

Final pic. These boards have been cut to 'BMX' size.

That all looks good. So this is happening with all three spokePOVs? Very strange. I don't know what to think about this.

We can try sending you another USBtinyISP. Maybe there's something wrong with the one you have. Please email [email protected] with a link to this thread for a replacement USBtinyISP.
