Hello - thanks for checking my post!
I'm a chemistry professor and I have a 'thing' for fluorescent, phosphorescent and other types of electroluminescent phenomena. I use all manner of paints, pigments and black lights in my demos. I want to use the EL wires to spice up my demo labcoat, but I could use a few pointers. Nothing fancy, no special effects (yet), just light. I was thinking of getting the starter kit, but I thought I would ask the 'experts'. Here are my questions -
Since I am thinking about a strip or two down each sleeve, and some down the front (possibly the back), I imagine I will have several wires running at once, instead of one long wire. Does that mean I need the in line 1-4 inverter?
For those who have worked with these, do you think a wire or tape would work better?
Best colors (the room will be very dark when I wear this).
Are they robust enough to handle movement - I'm an active lecturer?
Does the kit contain everything I need to do this?
Is it simple enough for someone with a minor mental block with respect to electronics.
Any cool ideas I should consider?
Thanks again.
Eric

That would be best. it's easiest to control lengths of EL wire in parallel.Stoneej wrote:Since I am thinking about a strip or two down each sleeve, and some down the front (possibly the back), I imagine I will have several wires running at once, instead of one long wire. That's mostly a matter of personal taste, but EL wire gives you good contrast between a narrow band of light and the darkness to either side.Stoneej wrote:For those who have worked with these, do you think a wire or tape would work better?
Entirely a matter of taste. They all look good.Stoneej wrote:Best colors (the room will be very dark when I wear this).
Yep. The wire works especially well if you run it along seams like piping.Stoneej wrote:Are they robust enough to handle movement - I'm an active lecturer?
This starter pack has enough to get you going with a single length of EL wire: https://www.adafruit.com/products/320Stoneej wrote:Does the kit contain everything I need to do this?
Once you're comfortable with that, you can move on to more complex arrangements.
If you're just connecting power and using the wire, it isn't much more complicated than a flashlight.. put the batteries in the inverter, plug in the strip, and flip the switch.Stoneej wrote:Is it simple enough for someone with a minor mental block with respect to electronics.
If you're a chemist, you can make EL pigment.. it's a combination of Zinc Sulfide and Copper:Stoneej wrote:Any cool ideas I should consider?
