HD44780 LCD

Postby mitpatterson » Wed Oct 06, 2010 4:41 pm

I have this LCD from the store here at adafruit, and i've had it for about a week, am just now getting around to playing with it, and the screen seems messed up, not sure if didn't do something right or if the screen is defective, i've posted pictures of the screen and my set up, please let me know if there is anything else i should test to determine which is bad(my setup vs actual LCD)

the code, shown below is a modified version of the example code for hello world, i changed the pin outs as directed in ladyadas directions and also changed the message to show the problem is across the whole screen

Your wiring looks right. I've wired up quite a few and in my experience, if you get it wrong you will get nothing at all, or you will see Japanese characters.

But the character blocks on your display are uneven sizes (some are only 4 pixels wide) and the characters are not aligned with them. Were the character blocks like that before you started on the "Bus Circuit" part of the tutorial?

no, if you remove the bus/data lines it just shows the blocks, with all the pins other than power and ground disconnected this what i get:

Try adjusting the contrast.

What I meant was the uneven sizes of the blocks. All the blocks should be 5x8 pixels with about a pixel spacing between them. In your first post, it looked like some were only 4 pixels wide, and the space between them was more like two.

With the contrast properly adjusted, the blocks will vanish into the background, but your characters should still be aligned within those 5x8 blocks. Yours appear not to be aligned.

In you last post - without the data lines, the blocks appear to be of even size, but on blocks 8 and 13 the rightmost column of pixels is dark. Can you get nice evenly illuminated 5x8 blocks by adjusting the contrast?
