Boarduino not responding to upload

Suddenly my Boarduino is not taking uploads. That being said, I just had an incident where some wires were not placed correctly (gnd going into 5V or Vice versa... However if I hit the reset button the red LED blinks three times as it should. Also when I try to upload a sketch the red LED blinks a few times but then stops and the error message comes up on Arduino saying that the programmer is not responding. I have a 168 chip available but I don't know if it would work on the circuit of the Boarduino.

Hope that's clear. Any help would be appreciated.

It's hard to say what might be damaged. It sounds like both the Atmega and your USB/Serial (FTDI?) cable are at least partly functional.
The 168 chip should work in the Boarduino if it has a booloader on it. Just remember to select Duemilanove w/Atmega128 in the IDE.
