Chain of 16x24 LED Matrix displays

Question : I intend to build a display sign using the 16x24 red LED matrix displays. Having RTFM , I see that you have a Arduino library written for creating text and so on , however I was left with two questions :

1. I intend on making the device to be real-time programmable via ethernet. For example on (event) send (message) to the sign and then (display) it. Is this possible with the current library?

2. Given #1 , which Arduino should I purchase for the project?
