Hello Folks,

i got a question about those RGB Stripes.

We bought 10m Meters for an University Project. Aim was to build a model of a chimney on a scale of 1:3 that is standing on our campus.
That chimney should get a light concept and we wanted to test it in a smaller format. The light concept consist of 8 seperate Stripes along the chimney.

So we thought we get 10m of the RGB Stripe, seperate it at the right length, so that we get 8 stripes, connect them again with wires, plug them to an arduino and power the whole thing with an ATX Power Supply. Thats it in theory.

Now the reality!
Bad thing is, that more or less half of the Stripes are not working anymore....
We do not really know what we did wrong. We definitly did not connected the Stripes to more than 5V of the Power Supply.
We tried to resolder all Stripes, tried to cut the first controller of the stripes, but nothing helped out.

The Stripes just light up some LEDs mostly white and mostly just 2 in a row the rest of the LEDs are black. Strange thing is that we checked some LEDs and they are working so it seems that the controllers broken but not the LEDs...
Most Strange was that we checked one stripe and it was working, then we checked some other stripes and after that we wanted to check the first Stripe again and it was broke just black LEDs.

Shouldn't we take an ATX?
Would be nice if we could find out what we did wrong so we dont brake the rest of the Stripe.

Hi there,

This is a difficult one to diagnose from just a description, but I will say that the LED strips very rarely "just go bad." More likely is some missing or marginal connection.

It would be helpful to see some sort of wiring diagram, even if it's just a simple sketch. A photo of the full set-up and close-ups of some of the parts would help too. Finally, a voltmeter reading from the +/- connections on the strips. Then we can start to narrow down the cause.
