avrdude: ser_open(): can't open device "COM12"...

I just build my first Boarduino - the green light is on, and the red light blinks 3 times when I hit reset (but not when I power on ??).

I've connected the Gnd, +5v, Tx and Rx lines from a MiniUSB adapter, and this seems to power the Boarduino OK, when I try to upload I get the

avrdude: ser_open(): can't open device "COM12"...

error.

Do you think this could be a problem with my Mini adapter, and not the Boarduino? Is there a procedure to test the FTDI chip and see if it's working OK?
