piTFT help

Post by Michael_Lewis »

After a fun afternoon of setting up the PiTFT 2.8 inch touchscreen AND getting it to run with the cupcade os it suddenly didnt boot properly. it would go to a blank white screen and i discovered that the pi isnt loading Kernel module snd_pcm_oss. i have checked and re-checked everything and looked through the guides and support and discovered through trial and error that the problem wasnt originated from the pi or the SD card but from the piTFT. I'd like to get this running again so i can continue building this project. Thank you in advance.

Please post clear, detailed pictures of both sides of the PiTFT, showing your soldering.

Ah! Well, that's ok then.

Are you using the pre-configured Raspbian image from the tutorial? Can you try generating that again? Seems like it must have gotten corrupted.

im using two different Os.
the cupcade with nes support and the raspbian with touch screen support. both of which are pre-configured. Could it be a SD card problem?

I did some testing and troubleshooting and the screen just inst being recognized. the kernel module for the cupcade (snd_pcm_oss) isnt loading it just stops. I can exit the shell and login with pi, raspberry just fine but the screen is solid white.

Try re-seating the flex cable in the connector on the bottom of the PCB.. pull the two black tabs at the ends outward, adjust the cable, then press them back in.

FPC connections require spot-on alignment, and it's easy for one to go slightly askew.

I tried re-seating the cable and it is in as far as it will go, as straight as possible and i still get a solid white screen when i boot up.

Well, it was worth a try.

What information do you find in `dmesg` toward the end when it configures the TFT driver?

The last thing it shows is loading kernel module snd_pcm_oss then it just stops.

snd_pcm_oss is an module for the ALSA audio system, which isn't related to the PiTFT.

What tests have you done that lead you to think the problem is with the TFT?

I have been able to press Alt + F3 and exit the shell and login with pi, raspberry. On the guides for the touchscreens it says that if the screen is solid white and doesnt change that for 30 seconds, connect a keyboard and login. if you can, then your pi and sd card is fine, the touchscreen isn't.

That's a fairly general test. Being able to log in is proof that the SD card works, but doesn't necessarily prove there's a problem with the PiTFT. In this case, it sounds like you're hitting a problem with the audio system between the point where the SD card boots the system and the TFT gets initialized.

Log in with the keboard, enter `dmesg` and post the results here please (between CODE tags). I'd like to see what the OS is doing around the time of the last good operation.

Re: piTFT help

Post by adafruit_support_mike »

Thank you.. this is the part I needed:

Code: Select all

[ 12.905729] gpiochip_find_base: cannot find free range
[ 12.932803] gpiochip_add: gpios -1..4 (stmpe) failed to register
The 'cannot find free range' error usually indicates a problem loading the GPIO kernel driver. That's odd if the whole thing worked and then stopped, but it's possible something got messed up in the system configuration.

What output do you get from `sudo lsmod | grep gpio`?
