DotStar faulty operation

Post by unic8 »

Hi,

just bought 4 meter of the DotStar 60 LED/meter (so actually 240 overall) and wired it to some Arduino compatible boards (Micro and Pro Trinket) with the "strandtest" example code of the official Adafruit library.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBhQ7gE4mfk

The exteral power supply got 5V 2A.
The LEDs are blinking wild and without any noticeable logic. What am I doing wrong or am I missing? Is this maybe caused by a defect?

Thanks!

Regards,
Erik

Do you have a ground between the strip power and the micro?

Thanks for your response!

No, I don't have ground between the Micro board and the DotStar strip.
I just hooked up the ground from the external supply.

My current wiring setup is pin 4 and 5 for clock and data like described in the example code.

How should I hook up ground between the strip and the board?
Instead or additional to the current ground to the power supply?

Thanks for the support!

Regards

Run a wire from the power supply ground or the strip ground to the microcontroller ground.
