You know, what would be a great idea
For the Adafruit Trellis PCB - Modifying the PCB layout to support SMD Dotstar or Neopixels or just RGB LED's (through the hole) So that buttons could change colour etc.
Use the same Gel overlay. Could be sold as a pre-made PCB for the Dotstars - or just bare pcb for the RGB led. It would need a lot more power for 16 dotstar/Neopixel (60x16 = 960mA) so an external power connector and data pin input would be needed.
Having played around with many Neopixel rings, and little 5pixel boards which were fun, but not all that useful (at least to me): a lighted keyboard with RGB feedback would be really valuable to try and change values on my arduino in the dark.
Just a thought.

Re: Adafruit Trellis
That would be a ground-up redesign. The chip that handles the keypad and LEDs doesn't speak NeoPixel or DotStar.
