Protecting Arduino Uno with a fuze

Post by JackMar »

I just burned out an Arduino Uno board (puff of smoke after applying power to VIN). I wonder is there is a way to use a low amperage, fast acting, inexpensive fuse to prevent another burnout?

I don't intend to use any 5 volt power to other external circuit so I want to know what the fuze amperage rating should be to keep the board from burning out the internal voltage regulators.

I used a 7.5 volt rated wall wart but of course it measures more when not loaded. The Uno is supposed to be safe for up to 20 volts. I could regulate the VIN voltage, I guess.

Recommended input voltage for the UNO is 7v-12v. Closer to 7v is best if you have a lot of extra circuitry or other loads connected to the 5v pin.

What component did the smoke come from? The voltage regulator?
Did you have anything else connected to the UNO?
