Question about adding more LED's

I got my kit last night and within 20 minutes or so I had it together and working great.

Now I'm ready to build my own from the schematics provided. I'm curious if I can add two additional transistors linked before the R5 resistor (status led), in order to be able to drive two more IR LED's.

Will this be okay, will having the status led plus two transistors overload the IC? Also, I plan on using 3 AA's, will that be okay with version 1.1's 47ohm led resistors?

second question, can I use the 4401 or 2222 transistor instead of the 3904?

the kit comes with PN2222 just make sure whatever you use has the right pinout!
