DAPA cable

Post by JSmithRDX »

Quick question; Is it safe to use the parallel port's supply to power an AVR?

I was just wondering whether you'd need a voltage regulator or not, and if it would harm the port.

Thanks :)

A parallel port has a supply pin?

This parallel port? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_port

It seems I've made a silly mistake.

It's just that in AVRDude's config file - (/etc/avrdude.conf) - under the DAPA cable config it labels pin 3 as VCC.

Any ideas why? :?

I don't know anything about DAPA so I will sign off of this thread... You might post this in the Arduino forum if you are using it with Arduino.

One or more of the parallel port lines can be used to supply power to the chip being programmed.

oPossum: Would that voltage be safe to use with an AVR? (is it <5V?)
And also; thanks a lot for the schematic.

I think i'll end up testing it out either way. :)

parallel ports are exactly 5V
