Gemma driver will not load for windows 8

I even went in and disabled the need for a signature, the Gemma shows up as an unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I've been browsing around online for the past 4 hours and haven't found a solution for how to get this driver to work, I really wanted to make my blinking goggles today too! Please help me! I operate windows 8.1

The Gemma doesn't actually have a USB chip, its bootloader emulates a USB device for 10 seconds after you press the reset button.

Do you get a "new device added" sound after pressing the button?

yes! I do get a new device added sound right before windows tells me it doesn't recognize the device.
