Adafruit Support,
Invoice # 687732
Date Ordered: Thursday 22 January, 2015
Item: Raspberry Pi Kit
My design team had ordered a raspberry pi kit through our college for a design project. The group followed all the instructions on the raspberry pi website to install the OS on the controller. But the raspberry pie failed to power on. There is no LED indicator lighting up, there is no HDMI output (Our monitor shows no signal). We tried a different power adaptor, and HDMI cable without luck. We thought the Raspberry Pi might be defective. Please let us know if there is anything we could do. This board is being used for a school project and we had a pretty tight schedule. Please assist us as soon as you could. Thank you so much!!
Sincerely
Design Team Leader
Keith Bagwell

Measure the voltage between one of the GND pins in the GPIO header and the 5v and 3.3v pins. That will give us some idea of what's happening.

Re: Raspberry Pi Model B+ Won't Power On
When i measured voltage between the ground pin and the power adapter it showed 5 volts coming into the board. The board is all packed back up and sealed in box for return on hope of getting a new one. There is something wrong with the board. The raspberry pi with with the administration of my school and we would like to try and return it for a new one. It was getting warm and measured voltage coming in and it said 5.04 Volts. I checked the leds and they are good. When you try to power it or to boot it, no led lights light up on the board and it gets very hot. We unplugged it and didn't want to do further damage to it.

Without confirming a cause of failure, I can only authorize a one-time replacement. If the second one fails the same way, we'll assume the hardware is good and is being killed by something in your operating environment.
Send a note to [email protected] with a link to this thread and the folks there will get you a new RasPi.

Re: Raspberry Pi Model B+ Won't Power On
Thank you for helping us with the issue and for replacing the hardware. I am going to post another forum based on how to setup up a raspberry pi from the start. This will help the team in making sure that everything is done right. If you mind helping us by posting on it, that will be appreciated.

What address do we need to ship the defective product to for replacement?

Re: Raspberry Pi Model B+ Won't Power On
I measured the voltage across both the 5V and 3.3 Volt pins. On the 5V side, the multimeter read between 4.8 and 4.98 Volts. On the 3.3 Volt side, the multimeter read between. 1.3 and 1.7 volts. It seems like the 3.3 volt side must not be getting the full voltage. This is the defective one that was mentioned in the earlier post. Any input on this findings?

Re: Raspberry Pi Model B+ Won't Power On
That does sound like a bad 3.3v regulator.
There's no easy way to damage the 3.3v regulator from the outside without also messing up the 5v rail, so we'll call that a verified hardware issue. With that information, we can offer you a full replacement with support for the new one.
