Thanks very much for the quick reply. I'm pretty sure it's built around an L293D so I'll start with that and try to adapt it to the motor shield or viceversa. If any of the train guys on here know what it's based on or what motor shields / board it works with, I'd appreciate the info.

Jumping in late to the Loconet Shield discussion with some pointers...
Alex Shephard has an Arduino Loconet Library at http://mrrwa.org/ that does both Loconet and DCC packet decoding
I've done a lot with Loconet shields, see http://www.spcoast.com/wiki/index.php/LocoShield
There is a vibrant community of model railroaders and arduino at [email protected], as well as (lower volume) [email protected]
