Hello:
I was interested in making a Heads Up Device as a prop for a costume. The general idea is that the unit will be on the forearm, and I want to be able to cycle through some still pictures as well as a video or two with the use of buttons. I know I can purchase the processor and shield, but do not know which ones would be best. I also want to have a few buttons available under the unit. These would cycle power, as well as allowing the user to go from picture to picture. What hardware do you think would be best to accomplish this?
The concept is something like this image

The TFT Touch Shield would be the best choice. It has a color LCD display with a touch-screen as well as a built-in SD card interface for storing the images. With the touch screen interface, your buttons (except maybe the power button) can just be pressure sensitive areas of the screen.

The TFT shield is nice for stills, but won't be able to handle video if you mean the "full-motion" variety. Certain types of simple animation could be handled on the Arduino/TFT though, depending what you're looking for.
Since the BANNED looks a bit bulky, there's space to cram all manner of hardware in there. If budget allows, I'd consider something like a Raspberry Pi (model A ideally, if you can track one down) with one of our small NTSC LCDs. There's some stuff in the pygame library for movie playback and stuff, and GPIO buttons are pretty straightforward. And c'mon, being able to say "my costume runs Linux" would be pretty cool.

Thanks Bill and pbugress!
I think I am going to go the Rasberry Pi route. I have a few other projects to complete, but I really like the idea of having some live video on the costume.
Now if I had a lot more still I think one of the "Volumetric" projectors would be simply over the top.

Not only could I have a costume that is powered by Linux, I could also project something telling us it is our only hope.
The costume is some Halo ODST BANNED, and the idea is to have a "projection" of Cortana from the game give instructions and interact with her
