Can I use the IR sensor - TSOP38238 for a tachometer?

wouldn't work unless you're ir source was flashing at a rate of 38KHz.
really you just want a photo transistor, but if you insist on buying from adafruit you could use a hall effect sensor and a magnet.
i think you can get an ir led and photo transistor all wrapped up in a bag together at radio shack.

Hey thanks . That's what I thought but I'd thought I'd check. Appreciate the tip on the hall effect sensor!tldr wrote:wouldn't work unless you're ir source was flashing at a rate of 38KHz.
