Using arduinos in a commercial product

Post by joshuah2 »

I realize that Arduinos are really designed for prototypes and one-off projects. I figured that, if my project gets to the kickstarter phase where I might produce a bunch to sell, I'd probably have to design my own board and figure out how to use a microcontroller chip without the Arduino board. But I've noticed that some Arduinos (like the Nano) are available in bulk for $2 each - easily cheap enough to stuff one in a product I'll be selling. Then I can put my own components on a second, small board. Is there any downside to doing things this way?

The only downside I can see with $2 boards is the quality and warranty of the product. If you don't care then go for it, if you do I would recommend building your own board from known good parts or buying something from a seller willing to provide a warranty.
