Can anyone recommend an electronic part numbering scheme for inventory use?

I like to use the letter type from the part reference designator (R,L,C,K,S,D etc.), followed by a sequential number. The parts are then organized by type in the stock room (caps in one area, switches in another). Plus the part# is related to the reference designator on the circuit boards.

That makes sense.
Considering how nutty ERP systems can get, it's nice when a simple system gets the job done.
