Wave Shield Output

Postby Chief Robot » Thu Feb 11, 2010 1:51 pm

I have the WAVE shield working with a pair of small earbud type headphones. The sound is ok, but not loud enough. Does anyone know where to buy a speaker like in the kit (I already have the other parts)?
Speaker - 3" diameter (77mm), 8 ohm impedence, good response between 200Hz to 10KHz (10KHz is the max frequency the Wave shield can make). The speaker is rated for 1W so if you want you can even stick a small amp between the shield and the speaker to boost up the volume

Also, I've never built an amplifier.
What is the easiset way to boost the sound volume (I've already boosted my sound file as loud as it can go without distorion)?

Cheers

Would this amplifier be compatible with the WAVE shield?
http://www.vellemanusa.com/us/enu/produ ... ?id=522062

music power output: 7W / 4ohm
output: 3.5Wrms / 4ohm or 2Wrms / 8ohm
total harmonic distortion: 0.05% (1W / 1kHz)
frequency response: 20Hz to 20kHz (-3dB)
signal-to-noise ratio: 86dB (A weighted)
input sensitivity: 40mV / 150Kohm
overload and short-circuit protected
supply voltage: 15V DC (8 to 18V DC possible) / 0.5A
dimensions: 2.2 x 1.4"

anything that takes line-level in (which is like 99% of audio projects) will work

Has anyone tried adding another amplifier chip to the WAVE shield like in the Halloween sketch example?

If you want a power boost, you can 'piggyback' another amplifier chip (TS922) on top of the existing one. This will approximately double the maximum volume

This seems like an easier quicker solution, but I'm afraid of damaging the WAVE shield.

That certainly looks like a good cheap option.
How are you powering it?

I added female headers to the Wave Shield on the side where the Arduino's 5v and Gnd pins are, and power it from there with jumpers (same thing for the audio lines). I tried a number of small speakers and found that some sounded better than others, but I had a couple that sound very good with the amp (e.g., 2" paper cone). It is pretty nice!
