Most relays have an NO and an NC contact, so you would not need separate relays for Normally Open and Normally Closed. Also, if you are running the steppers as Bipolar, you would only need to break one leg of the coil so you could do it with 2 relays per motor.
@teranami - A customer has found a way to stack shields to control 4 motors. There are some limitations, but still it is more attractive than the relay solution. See here for details: http://blog.workingsi.com/2011/03/metho ... -from.html
Other options for controlling more steppers include the serial stepper controller modules from Pololu http://www.pololu.com/search?page=1&que ... per+driver

I downloaded the gcode zip but unsure of what to run. I run the hydra gui but what do I put on my uno? With two years later any update? Whats the work flow to use this? Thanks.
