Hi,
When I first tried to run a DC motor off the M1 terminal of the my new motor shield, it did not run, and I smelt something burning.
The M4 and M3 terminals work fine, while the M1 and M2 terminals are non-functional (tested with a stepper using the Adafruit_Motorshield library).
When I power the shield with an external source (12V), detached from the arduino with no motors connected, the TB6612FNG motor driver IC powering the M1 and M2 terminals heats up very quickly -almost burnt my finger touching it just 5 seconds after power on - and begins to emit smoke after a minute.
Could you send me a replacement as soon as possible? Many thanks!

Could you post clear pictures of your board, any soldering you did and the connections to it? What motor were you trying to run on M1 and M2?

The motor I used is the NEMA-17 stepper from the Adafruit shop https://www.adafruit.com/product/324
Here are pics of my soldering.
